How to Design Your Wedding Marquee Layout
Designing the layout of your wedding marquee is one of the most exciting parts of planning your day. It’s your chance to create a space that not only reflects your style but flows effortlessly from one moment to the next. With no fixed walls or floorplans, a marquee offers complete flexibility – ideal for personalising every detail.
Start with your guest list
Your layout begins with numbers. Knowing how many people you’re inviting – and how many are attending the full day versus the evening – will guide how much space you need for dining, dancing, and everything in between.
Ensure there is ample space for each guest to dine and move comfortably for seated dining, with additional space for a dance floor, bar, and reception area. At County Marquees, we’ll help you calculate your space requirements accurately and recommend the right size and shape of marquee, so it feels comfortable but not oversized.
Think in zones
Divide your marquee into distinct areas that reflect the flow of the day. Typical zones include:
- Reception & welcome drinks – Consider high-top tables, a drinks station, or an outdoor canopy extension.
- Dining area – Ensure there’s space for guests to move around chairs easily and for catering teams to serve efficiently.
- Bar – Position it away from entrances to avoid crowding but close enough to be a focal point.
- Dance floor & stage – Place centrally or near the bar to encourage participation.
- Lounge or chill-out area – Use soft furnishings or rugs to define this quieter space.
Defining zones helps guests navigate the space easily and gives your day a sense of natural rhythm.
Consider the venue surroundings
Is there a view you want to make the most of? A feature in the garden you’d like to frame? Since wedding marquees are custom-built, they can be positioned to highlight the best parts of your location. We’ll advise on orientation to make the most of natural light, create smooth access routes, and ensure scenic backdrops are visible from key areas.
Also consider practical needs such as where catering tents, toilet facilities, and power sources will go. Ensuring these are placed out of sight, but easily accessible, helps maintain the overall look and feel of the day.
Don’t forget the dance floor
The dance floor is often the centrepiece of the evening, so it deserves special attention. Placing it centrally helps maintain energy and invites guests to join in. If you have a band or DJ, be sure to allocate space for a stage and their technical requirements.
We can also enhance the area with starlit linings, lighting rigs, or an LED dance floor to transform the space as day turns to night. If space allows, consider seating nearby so guests can enjoy the music even if they’re not dancing.
Choose a seating plan that fits your style
The way you seat your guests plays a big role in the feel and flow of your celebration. Options include:
- Round tables – Create a formal and classic look, typically seating 8–10 guests each.
- Long banquet tables – Encourage a communal, informal feel, with space-saving advantages.
- Mix-and-match layouts – Blend both for a more eclectic or zoned aesthetic.
Be mindful of spacing between tables – aim for at least 1.5m between each for comfortable movement. We’ll work with you to develop a plan that reflects your vibe and allows for the best flow.
Keep it flowing
A successful layout allows guests to move comfortably from one area to the next. Avoid placing the bar near narrow entrances and ensure any outdoor features-like games areas or photo spots-are well-signposted and easy to access.
If children or elderly guests are attending, consider adding quieter areas with soft seating or extra space for accessibility. Clear signage, good lighting, and thoughtful spacing all contribute to a seamless guest experience.
