Traditional Pole Vs Clearspan Marquees: Which one’s best for your event?

Choosing the right marquee is a crucial part of planning an unforgettable event. At County Marquees, our two most popular options — the traditional pole marquee and the clearspan marquee — offer different advantages depending on your event’s style, season, and site.

This guide covers the main considerations, from layout and site suitability to styling and weatherproofing, so you can choose the best marquee for your needs.

Two images side by side of different types of marquees.

Aesthetic and atmosphere

Traditional pole marquees, similar to Sailcloth or Sperry tents, are ideal for relaxed countryside settings. Their central wooden poles create a romantic, airy look that suits rustic or vintage themes. They require space for guy ropes and connecting walkways but make a strong visual impression with festoons and floral styling. This style is especially popular for wedding marquee hire and garden parties.

Clearspan marquees, also known as frame marquees, are more contemporary and clean-lined. With no internal poles, they provide an open-plan layout and are highly adaptable — perfect for modern weddings, corporate events, or venues with panoramic views. They’re also a popular choice for film and TV marquee hire due to their spacious interiors and ease of access.

Layout and site flexibility

Clearspan marquees allow total freedom when planning your floorplan. With no internal poles and a modular design, you can easily define zones or include extras like covered terraces, integrated bars, hidden service areas, or even drive in vintage vans for bar services.

Traditional marquees create a warm, characterful setting but are less flexible. Centre poles and guy ropes mean they’re best suited to open, level lawns. They can’t be connected directly to other marquees or installed on suspended floors, so we recommend them for flat, spacious outdoor sites.

Marquee specifications

To help visualise how each marquee might suit your event, here’s a quick overview of the key specifications for both styles:

Clearspan marquee

  • Capacity: 30 — 1000 people
  • Dimensions: 3m — 15m wide
  • Windows: Panoramic
  • Linings: Ivory pleated and white flat
  • Starlight linings: Black or Ivory
  • Features: Clear roof and Gable panels

Traditional pole marquee

  • Capacity: 40 — 350 people
  • Dimensions: 20’, 30’ and 40’ wide
  • Windows: Panoramic
  • Linings: Ivory pleated or no linings
  • Features: Characterful wooden poles and a spacious interior – perfect for hanging décor

Weather and seasonal performance

Traditional marquees are perfect for spring to early autumn, offering a light, breathable atmosphere for warm days. However, they’re less suited to wind, rain, or colder conditions.

Clearspan marquees are designed for year-round use. They can be fully enclosed, heated, floored, and secured even in exposed or uneven locations. If you’re planning a winter celebration or need weatherproof confidence, this is the more practical option.

Tip for summer events: whilst clear marquees are stunning in summer, we advise drapes or shade to protect guests, flowers and décor during hot spells.

Styling potential

Both marquee types are versatile, but each lends itself to different styling approaches:

Traditional pole marquees suit:

  • Festoon lighting, flower hoops, and rustic furniture
  • Soft fabrics, natural colour schemes, and garden themes
  • Informal or romantic events such as party marquee hire

Clearspan marquees suit:

  • Dramatic lighting and projection mapping
  • Bold, modern aesthetics or clean corporate styling
  • Zoning with partitions or clear panels
  • Structured settings like corporate launches and media shoots

Which marquee should you choose?

Choose a traditional pole marquee if:

  • You want a romantic, rustic feel for a countryside celebration
  • You’re hosting a summer wedding or garden party
  • Your venue has a flat, open lawn with soft ground
  • You’re planning for 40 to 350 guests

Choose a clearspan marquee if:

  • You want full layout flexibility or a modern finish
  • You need to install on hard ground or a sloped site
  • You’re planning a winter event or need climate control
  • Your event involves production, branding, or behind-the-scenes logistics
  • You’re hosting between 30 and 1000 guests
